Quick Answer: The average monthly internet cost in the US ranges from $35 to $80 for standard broadband. Most households end up paying about $55 to $65 after promotional rates end. LTE and 5G home internet plans usually cost between $25 and $50 per month. These plans are increasingly competitive in terms of coverage and speed.

You’re sitting at home, looking at your monthly bill, wondering if everyone else is paying the same or if you’re just getting a bad deal. Maybe you’ve seen a neighbor mention a lower price, or you received a new-customer offer in the mail for half what you’re currently paying. The truth is that most people have no idea what the average internet cost per month really is. This makes it hard to tell if your current plan is a fair rate or just draining your bank account.

What is the average internet cost per month right now?

In the United States, the average monthly cost of internet ranges from about $50 to $80 for a typical household broadband plan. This range is broad, and it is because the actual price depends on your location, the technology you have access to, the speed tier you select, and whether you are bundling with TV or phone service.

The type of connection that comes into your home is the main factor affecting both price and performance. Here’s a clear overview of how each technology compares.

Average internet cost based on connection type

Not all broadband is the same. DSL uses existing phone lines, cable operates on coaxial cables, and fiber runs on glass strands that transmit light. Each type has its own pricing and performance limits. The table below shows what households usually pay for each type before fees.

1. DSL Internet ($35 — $55/month)

DSL is the reliable choice for home internet. It uses existing telephone lines to reach places where newer technologies haven’t arrived yet. Speeds between 10 and 100 Mbps are good for everyday browsing, standard streaming, and light video calls. For single users or small households with basic needs, it’s an affordable, straightforward option that provides what you need without overspending.

2. Cable Internet ($55 — $90/month)

Cable internet is a great choice for most households. It offers speeds from 100 to 1,200 Mbps, which allows for streaming, remote work, and gaming at the same time without issues. It’s widely available in urban and suburban areas, making it the go-to option for millions of homes. While speeds may lower a bit during busy evening hours, it still stands as one of the most dependable mid-range options for everyday use.

3. Fiber Internet ($50 — $80/month)

Fiber offers the best performance for residential users today. With speeds ranging from 300 Mbps to 5 Gbps and equal upload and download rates, it stands out as the ideal option for remote workers, large households, and those using several heavy devices at once. Fiber’s consistent value and performance at this price are hard to match anywhere else.

4. Fixed Wireless / LTE Internet ($50 — $70/month)

Fixed wireless internet bridges the gap between rural challenges and urban ease. It uses cellular towers to provide speeds from 25 to 300 Mbps. This service reaches suburban and rural areas where fiber and cable networks are not available. With no cables, simple installation, and no long-term contracts, it offers a practical and flexible option for households beyond the usual broadband coverage.

5. 5G Home Internet ($30 — $70/month)

5G home internet is becoming one of the best value options for urban and suburban users. It offers speeds from 87 to 415 Mbps through a plug-and-play router, with no installation appointment needed. For homes in areas with good 5G coverage, it provides competitive performance at the lower end of the monthly cost range. Its price makes it one of the most affordable ways to access fast home broadband.

6. Satellite Internet ($65 — $165/month)

Satellite internet serves one main purpose: connecting places where other options are unavailable. You can get speeds from 25 to 300 Mbps, depending on the service level. However, the higher latency and wider price range show the technology’s limits and its special value in truly remote areas. For rural cabins, off-grid properties, and places with no ground-based infrastructure, it is the only feasible choice.

One thing not covered is consistency. Cable speeds often drop during peak evening hours when neighbors use the same local node. Fiber does not have that issue; it offers dedicated capacity. Fixed wireless and satellite connections can be influenced by weather and terrain. If you live in a rural or off-grid area, your choice of connection type is usually determined by what is physically available, not by your preference.

What these numbers won’t show you is what happens after month 12. Most plans have promotional introductory rates. Once that period ends, your monthly internet cost can increase by $20 to $40 without warning. This is the main reason people feel surprised by their bill.

Average internet cost based on provider

Knowing connection types is only part of the story. The other part is understanding how each provider sets their prices and the trade-offs they make between cost, speed, and contract flexibility. The five providers listed below show a range of options available in urban, suburban, and rural markets in the US.

How to read this: Prices listed are for advertised plan ranges. Actual bills may differ depending on location, equipment, and promotional status. Always check the current pricing directly with the provider before signing up.

1. UbiFi — $89.99 to $129.99/month ⭐ Top Pick

UbiFi is designed for households that other providers have ignored. It uses 4G LTE and 5G networks to provide speeds up to 200 Mbps with unlimited data and no long-term contracts. This makes it one of the easiest rural internet options available today. For rural homes, RV owners, and off-grid users who need reliable connectivity without satellite delays or cable infrastructure, UbiFi consistently works where others do not.

2. Starlink — $80 to $165/month

Starlink has changed satellite internet significantly. It offers speeds up to 300 Mbps, unlimited data, and no contract, making it a real contender for remote and off-grid areas. Right now, it’s the best satellite choice, especially for people in places without nearby cellular towers. While equipment costs are important to consider at the start, the month-to-month flexibility eases worries about long-term commitment.

3. Viasat — $39.99 to $119.99/month

Viasat provides internet access in rural and remote areas where choices are few, with speeds reaching up to 100 Mbps depending on the plan. The lower starting price is appealing, but it’s important to think about the 35–100 GB data caps and the 24-month contract before committing. For light users in these areas who don’t stream a lot or work from home full-time, it can be a viable option; just be aware of the data limits.

4. T-Mobile Home Internet — $30 to $70/month

T-Mobile Home Internet is one of the most affordable broadband choices for urban and suburban households. It offers speeds from 87 to 415 Mbps, along with unlimited data, no contract, and a plug-and-play setup that doesn’t need a technician visit. For city and suburban residents who want fast, flexible internet without the commitment of a traditional cable plan, the value at this price is hard to beat.

5. AT&T — $34 to $60/month

AT&T offers various options for households, including fiber and fixed wireless. Speeds vary from 100 Mbps to 5 Gbps based on your location and plan. Most plans come with unlimited data and no long-term contracts, making it a straightforward, commitment-free choice for urban and suburban users. In areas where fiber is available, AT&T’s performance in this price range competes well with any provider.

Rural households, take note: UbiFi’s unlimited 4G LTE and 5G internet service stands out for off-grid and rural areas. It doesn’t require dish installation or a long-term contract, which are two obstacles that can make it tough to switch from satellite options if they don’t perform well. The unlimited data with no hard cap offers a significant benefit compared to Viasat’s tiered data plans.

The real price breakdown: what you’re actually paying for

$120 Avg. bill after promotional period ends (cable)
$15–$25 Typical equipment rental fee per month
$10–$30 Common hidden fees & taxes added at billing
2-year standard contract length with early-termination clauses

The advertised price and the actual price are often different. When you see a “$49.99/month” headline in an advertisement, that amount rarely includes:

Equipment fees for renting a modem and router can add $15–$25 monthly.
Installation charges are one-time fees ranging from $75 to $150.
Broadcast or network access surcharges are billed separately from the base plan.
State and local taxes vary significantly by location.
Rate increases after 12–24 months are the most common source of sticker shock.

Worth knowing: Buying your own modem, which costs between $80 and $150, instead of renting one from a provider saves you money in less than a year. This choice also removes a regular expense that many people don’t realize they’re paying.

How much internet speed do you actually need?

This is where many people end up paying too much without knowing it. The standard plan most providers offer during signup is meant to be more than sufficient. This often means you’re paying for extra features that you’ll never use.

1. 1–2 People, Light Use (25–50 Mbps)

For a solo user or a couple who want to keep things simple, 25 to 50 Mbps is plenty. Checking emails, browsing social media, and having the occasional video call all work well within this range without any noticeable issues. There’s no reason to pay for speed you won’t use; a basic DSL or entry-level cable plan easily supports this type of household.

2. 2–3 People, Moderate Use (100–200 Mbps)

This is the ideal range for the average household. With 100 to 200 Mbps, you can stream 4K on one screen, take a video call in another room, and let someone game in the background at the same time, all without anyone noticing a slowdown. Most mid-range cable and fiber plans fit into this range and handle the daily needs of a small family with ease.

3. 4+ People, Heavy Use (300–500 Mbps)

Larger households need headroom. When several people are streaming in 4K, gaming online, and working from home at the same time, anything below 300 Mbps starts to show its problems. With speeds between 300 and 500 Mbps, everyone gets what they need without bandwidth becoming an issue. Fiber or high-end cable plans are the best choice here.

4. Remote Workers / Home Office (200–500 Mbps)

Speed matters for remote work, and upload speed is just as important as download speed. Video calls, cloud file transfers, and shared document tools rely on a steady upstream connection, which many basic plans do not provide. A speed between 200 and 500 Mbps with symmetrical or close to symmetrical upload helps keep a home office functioning like a real office.

5. Power Users / Smart Home (500 Mbps–1 Gbps)

At this level, the goal isn’t just speed. It’s headroom. A fully loaded smart home with several users running demanding tasks at the same time needs a connection that never slows down, never prioritizes one user over another, and never makes anyone wait. Speeds of 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps support every device on the network at full capacity, with extra room to spare. Fiber is the only technology that consistently delivers at this level without compromise.

Gigabit internet (1,000 Mbps) is being heavily advertised right now. However, a typical household of four that streams and works remotely will rarely use up even a 300 Mbps connection during normal daily activities. If you’re on a gigabit plan because it was bundled cheaply or seemed like a good choice for the future, that’s fine. Just don’t assume that having more speed always results in a better internet.

Is the internet cost per month actually worth it?

From an economic viewpoint, broadband internet is one of the more valuable ongoing expenses for most households. Compare it to what it replaces or makes possible:

The value lens: A $70/month internet plan allows for remote work, which can save $200 to $600/month in commuting costs. It also replaces cable TV, saving $80 to $120/month compared to a regular cable package. This plan enables streaming services instead of going to the cinema and connects every device in the home, all from one bill.

That said, “worth it” is relative. If you’re paying $110 a month for the internet and you’re a single person who checks email and watches YouTube, that’s probably too much. If you have five people working and studying from home at the same time, $80 a month for a reliable fiber connection is a good deal.

Signs you might be overpaying

Your promotional period ended more than 6 months ago, and you haven’t called to renegotiate.
You’re renting a modem/router from your provider instead of owning your own.
You’re on a gigabit plan, but your household has fewer than four simultaneous users.
You’re paying for a bundle that includes TV channels you’ve never once watched.
You haven’t compared available plans in your area in the last 18 months.

What drives internet prices up, and what can you do about it

The setup of the internet market in many areas of the US means that most households can choose between one or two providers, not five. This limited competition is the main reason why American broadband prices are higher than in many similar countries. Without real pressure to compete, prices tend to rise.

A few things that genuinely help:

Call and ask for a loyalty rate.

Most providers have retention teams that can offer discounts not advertised publicly. Just mentioning that you’ve found a better promotional rate, even from a competitor, can lead to discounts of $15 to $30 off per month without changing your plan. Many people find this works on the first call, and it typically takes around 20 minutes.

Check for low-income assistance programs.

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and similar programs run by individual providers can lower or eliminate broadband costs for qualifying households. To qualify, you often need to participate in SNAP, Medicaid, or other federal assistance programs. It’s a good idea to check for eligibility, no matter your income level. The eligibility thresholds are often wider than many expect.

Own your equipment

As mentioned earlier, buying a compatible modem and router is one of the quickest ways to lower your monthly internet costs. Most providers allow customer-owned equipment. You can usually find the list of approved devices on their support pages.

Consider the no-contract approach.

Some providers now offer month-to-month plans without long-term contracts. Sometimes, these plans have rates that compete with promotional pricing. While they might cost a little more upfront, they let you switch quickly if a better option comes up in your area. As fiber infrastructure grows, this is becoming more likely.

The bottom line

The average internet cost per month for a US household is between $50 and $80 for most broadband connection types. However, this amount doesn’t include equipment fees, taxes, or the price increase that usually comes after the first year. Whether it’s “worth it” really depends on how you use it, not just on the number.

What’s almost always true: most people either overpay for speed they don’t need, rent equipment they could own, or haven’t had a conversation about renegotiation with their provider in years. Fixing any one of these can significantly lower your monthly bill. You don’t need to change plans or move; you just need to understand what the market looks like and then ask.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average internet bill per month in the US?

The national average internet bill ranges from $50 to $80 per month for a standard home broadband plan. However, your final bill is often higher when you include equipment rental fees, taxes, and surcharges. Fiber plans generally have more stable pricing, while cable plans can change a lot due to promotions and bundling.

Why is my internet bill so high compared to advertised prices?

Internet bills are higher than advertised because introductory pricing lasts for only 12 to 24 months. Companies also add hidden equipment fees, which range from $15 to $25 per month, as well as taxes and surcharges. Once the promotional period is over, prices usually increase by $20 to $40. The only way to know your true long-term cost is to read the fine print about pricing after the promotional period before you sign up.

How much internet speed do I actually need for a household?

A typical household with 2 to 4 people needs 100 to 300 Mbps for smooth 4K streaming, video calls, and regular browsing. Gigabit plans, which offer 1,000 Mbps, are great for larger households with heavy internet usage or for those who create and upload content. However, for most homes, these plans offer more speed than you really need.

Can I negotiate a lower internet bill with my provider?

Yes, you can negotiate a lower internet bill by calling your provider’s retention department. Mention lower prices from competitors or ask for current promotional discounts. When you reach out to your provider’s retention line, let them know you are considering switching or that you have found a better deal elsewhere. This often leads to a discount or a new promotional rate on your account. This strategy usually works best after your original promotional period has ended and your bill has increased.

Is fiber internet worth the cost compared to cable?

In most cases, yes, especially when the prices are similar. Fiber offers the same upload and download speeds, which is very important for video calls and remote work. It is usually more reliable during peak hours and often has simpler and more transparent pricing without the large increases after the promotional rate. Where fiber is available and priced competitively, it is generally better long-term value.
